NUPENG Driver Cries Out Over Excessive Fuel "Samples" at Military Checkpoints

A distressed petroleum tanker driver has sent a frantic plea to the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), exposing a pattern of harassment and extortion at security checkpoints across the country.

 In a viral video, the driver lamented the "impossible" demands from security operatives, specifically army personnel, who reportedly demand large quantities of fuel as "samples" from transit trucks.

​According to the driver, the practice of giving small samples has escalated into a mandatory requirement for multiple large containers of fuel at every stop. He expressed frustration that refusing these demands leads to physical assault and threats. "Army man dey tell me say he go slap me if I no make am three or four [containers]," the driver revealed, highlighting the physical danger drivers face while transporting essential products.

​The core of the driver's complaint rests on the fact that the fuel being "sampled" belongs to private owners, and these forceful deductions inevitably lead to significant shortages upon delivery. He questioned how drivers are expected to account for these losses when they reach the filling stations, as the products are often sealed before transit.

​A Call for Union Intervention

​In the same vein, the driver called on fellow truck drivers to share the video to create global awareness of their plight. He warned that if NUPENG and the relevant authorities do not intervene, the situation could worsen to the point where security agents demand 25-liter jerry cans as "samples" for every passage.

​"Na somebody product be this what we dey carry. If you carry like this four go give person, you no go get shortage?" the driver asked rhetorically. He emphasized that the mental and physical toll is becoming unbearable, as drivers are caught between the "devil and the deep blue sea"—the threat of military violence on the road and the threat of job loss due to product shortage at the destination.
