Impeachment Blocked: Rivers Chief Judge Justice Simeon Amadi Declines to Probe Governor Fubara

​In a major blow to the impeachment moves against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi, has formally declined to set up a seven-member judicial panel to investigate the Governor and his deputy, Ngozi Odu. This decision marks a critical turning point in the ongoing power struggle within the state, as the judiciary steps in to uphold existing legal orders.

However, ​the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, had submitted two separate requests on January 16, 2026, demanding a probe into alleged "gross misconduct," including claims of unbudgeted spending from state coffers. However, Justice Amadi’s response was clear and firm.

​In a formal letter addressed to the Speaker, the Chief Judge cited an existing court order that currently restrains any such action toward the impeachment of the Governor.

​While the legislature insists on its right to probe the executive, the Chief Judge’s refusal highlights a fundamental principle: the law must be followed over political ambition. This move effectively stalls the impeachment process for now, providing Governor Fubara with a crucial legal shield as the state navigates these "impeachment moves".
