'No Uniform is a License to Kill' — IGP Orders Dismissal and Prosecution of Officers Involved in Mene Ogidi’s Death

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has ordered the immediate dismissal and criminal prosecution of ASP Nuhu Usman and the officers involved in the fatal shooting of Mene Ogidi in Delta State. Following an internal investigation that confirmed a gross violation of firearm regulations, the IGP reaffirmed a zero-tolerance policy for extrajudicial killings, stating that no level of suspicion justifies the unlawful termination of a citizen's life.

​The leadership of the Nigeria Police Force has taken decisive action against the officers responsible for the death of Mene Ogidi, which occurred on April 26, 2026, in Effurun, Delta State. In a high-level address, the Inspector-General of Police revealed that the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) and an orderly room trial have already concluded their sessions. The investigation confirmed without ambiguity that ASP Nuhu Usman and his team acted in direct violation of Force Order 237, which strictly governs the use of firearms by police personnel.

​The findings of the internal disciplinary machinery highlight a complete disregard for standard operating procedures. The IGP emphasized that while the suspect was apprehended under suspicion of possessing a firearm, the duty of the police is to protect lives and bring suspects to lawful justice, not to extinguish them. Consequently, the FDC has recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Nuhu Usman and the other superintendent involved, while the three inspectors attached to the team have faced similar recommendations through their respective orderly room trials.

​To ensure the full weight of the law is felt, the IGP confirmed that once the Police Service Commission ratifies the dismissals, all officers involved will be handed over to judicial authorities. They are set to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide, marking a transition from internal police discipline to a formal trial in a court of law.
