Effurun Tragedy: Police Officer ASP Nuhu Usman Faces Disciplinary Action Over Fatal Shooting of Suspect

 The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State, on April 26, 2026. The officer involved, ASP Nuhu Usman, has been transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, alongside his team, to face the Force Disciplinary Committee and subsequent prosecution for the extra-judicial killing.

​The leadership of the Nigeria Police Force has officially addressed the tragic incident that occurred on April 26, 2026, in Effurun, Delta State, leading to the death of a suspect identified as Mene Ogidi. According to preliminary reports, operatives from the Effurun Area Command were responding to a tip-off at the Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway. The intervention followed the apprehension of Ogidi by members of a transport union, who allegedly caught him attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.

​The situation took a violent turn during the process of taking the suspect into lawful custody. Official reports indicate that the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, discharged his firearm in a manner that clear violated existing police regulations, resulting in the fatal shooting of Ogidi. The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, noted that the discharge was an unauthorized use of force, prompting immediate administrative and legal repercussions for the officers involved.

​In a swift response to the outcry for accountability, the Inspector-General of Police has ordered the immediate transfer of ASP Nuhu Usman and his entire team to the Force Headquarters in Abuja. They are expected to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for summary disciplinary measures. Beyond internal discipline, the officers will also face criminal prosecution, as the police leadership maintains that there is no place for extra-judicial actions within the institution.
