Jim Obazee and Police Commissioner Summoned to Testify in Emefiele’s Alleged $6.23m Fraud Trial

They are set to testify as prosecution witnesses in the alleged $6.23 million fraud trial of former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele, specifically to provide evidence regarding the Naira redesign policy and alleged forgery.

​The ongoing trial of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, enters a critical phase today, April 28, 2026, as high-profile witnesses appear following a court-ordered subpoena. Justice Hamza Muazu, sitting at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja, issued the order yesterday, April 27, requiring former Financial Reporting Council (FRC) Chief Executive Jim Obazee and a Commissioner of Police, Eloho Okpoziakpo, to testify this morning.

​The summons is tied to the prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which is trying Emefiele on an amended 20-count charge. The counts include alleged criminal breach of trust, alleged forgery, abuse of office, and alleged conspiracy to obtain by false pretense. The case centers on the alleged $6.23 million that the commission claims was fraudulently removed from the apex bank under the guise of funding foreign election observers.

​Justice Muazu specifically mandated the witnesses to appear by 9:00 AM to tender newspaper publications and provide explanations related to the Naira redesign policy. The judge noted that both Obazee and Okpoziakpo were instrumental in investigating the alleged offences for which the former Governor is standing trial. Their testimony is expected to clarify how the currency policy intersected with the alleged fraudulent activities and the allegedly forged signatures used in the process.
