 Fatal Lexus Crash: Anthony Joshua’s Driver Adeniyi Kayode Faces 4 Charges as Court Adjourns Case to Feb 25

The trial of Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the driver behind the wheel during the tragic Anthony Joshua crash, returned to the Sagamu Magistrate Court today with a mix of frustration and legal maneuvering. On Tuesday, January 20, 2026, the courtroom was filled with anticipation, but the "Bitter Truth" of the day was a further delay in the quest for accountability.

During the proceedings, the prosecuting counsel, Nijiwe Richard, informed the court that while they were ready with three witnesses, a fourth crucial witness was absent. He requested an adjournment to allow the prosecution to "duplicate the case file" and transmit it to the Ogun State Attorney-General’s office for legal advice.

​While the defense counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, strongly opposed the delay—arguing that the defense was ready to proceed immediately—Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun ruled in favor of the prosecution.

​"In the interest of justice, the case is hereby adjourned to February 25, 2026, for further hearing," the Magistrate declared.

A Family Divided by Grief

​The mood outside the courtroom was somber. While the driver has been granted bail in the sum of ₦5 million, the emotional cost remains immeasurable. Reports from Vanguard suggest that even Joshua’s own family members are questioning if the trial is "worth it," given the close bond the driver shared with the team before the tragedy.

​However, for the law, the "Bitter Truth" remains: speed and negligence have consequences. As  the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) continues to point toward "wrongful overtaking" as a primary cause of the crash that nearly took the life of Nigeria’s favorite boxing champion.
