"209 of Us Have Died, Others Still Dying!" — Ebonyi Varsity Retirees Cry Out to Gov. Nwifuru Over Unpaid Entitlements

Retirees of EBUS

Retired workers of Ebonyi State University (EBSU) have sent a heartbreaking plea to Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru and the university management over years of unpaid pensions and gratuities, revealing that no fewer than 209 of their colleagues have died while waiting.

In a viral appeal video, the elderly ex-workers detailed severe health and financial struggles, with many unable to afford basic food, medical care, or house rent. One of the retirees, Okpoye Okoro, disclosed: "Many of us have died, up to 209 as of the time we recorded it. Several are still dying, while others are still sick. It's very heartbreaking that after years of suffering, the government will refuse to pay us our pensions and gratuities." Another retiree—who went blind while still serving the institution after over 30 years—pleaded with Governor Nwifuru to intervene and order the immediate release of their earned benefits.

The ex-workers rejected claims surrounding "consolidated salaries," appealing to the governor's compassionate nature to save the surviving retirees from further misery and death.
