INEC Unveils New 2027 Election Guidelines Following Enactment of Electoral Act 2026

​INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan has unveiled new electoral guidelines for the 2027 polls following a high-level meeting with political party leaders in Abuja.

​The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken a major step toward the 2027 general elections by convening a high-level meeting with leaders of various political parties in Abuja. The meeting, which took place on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, was focused on unveiling and deliberating on the new electoral guidelines that will govern the conduct of the upcoming polls. This move follows the recent enactment of the Electoral Act 2026, a development that has necessitated a comprehensive review of all existing electoral procedures and regulations.

​During the session, the INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, emphasized that the updated guidelines are strictly aligned with the provisions of the new law. He noted that with the evolving framework, stakeholders and political parties can no longer operate using outdated regulations. The meeting saw the attendance of top party officials, including representatives from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party, all of whom were present to review the newly drafted document aimed at ensuring the credibility of the 2027 exercise.

​In addition to the guidelines, the commission outlined several key preparatory measures, including a new schedule for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise. According to the timeline provided, online pre-registration is set to begin on August 18, 2025, followed by in-person registration starting on August 25, 2025. INEC also announced plans for a nationwide voter register revalidation exercise, which is intended to clean up the electoral roll by removing duplicate entries and deceased persons.

​As political activities intensify, the commission's move has sparked a wave of conversation regarding the feasibility of real-time electronic transmission of results to the IReV portal, a topic that remains a point of debate among many Nigerians. While the ruling APC and opposition figures are already making strategic moves for the 2027 cycle, INEC has maintained that its primary focus remains on creating a transparent and updated framework for the elections. The public continues to watch closely as the countdown to the registration exercises later next year begins.
