King Charles III to Host President Tinubu for First UK State Visit in 37 Years

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to embark on a landmark two-day state visit to the United Kingdom from March 18 to 19, 2026, following a formal invitation from His Majesty King Charles III. This historic engagement marks the first state visit by a Nigerian leader to the United Kingdom in nearly four decades, with the last occurring in 1989 when General Ibrahim Babangida was hosted by the late Queen Elizabeth II. 

The announcement was confirmed via the official X handle of the British Royal Family, stating that the President and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu will be formally received and hosted by the King and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle. Reacting to the development, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the invitation as a significant diplomatic milestone for the administration.

​This high-level engagement is expected to deepen the strategic partnership between both nations, focusing on trade, security, and climate change. While the President and King Charles have held previous private discussions, including a notable audience at Buckingham Palace in 2024, this official visit represents a powerful tool of soft-power diplomacy intended to solidify Nigeria's standing with one of its most critical international partners.
